Most people are aware that Australia is a leading nation in the world of rowing. But few will be aware of its origins or history. What transpired in Newcastle and the experiences of Newcastle Rowing Club were, and are, replicated throughout the country. This book is intended to shed some light on the basis of that success.

In Colonial Australia, Novocastrians relied on boats and those who propelled them for their daily transport needs. Rowing also provided enjoyment, recreation and sport. Aquatic regattas were not just for the competition; for many local communities they were important social occasions.

This is the story of Newcastle Rowing Club that has been active throughout several eras since its inception in 1870. It was around during the last few decades of the 19th century. Sometimes called the "Golden Age of Rowing" because of Australia's domination of world championship sculling, these were interesting and often exciting times as the sport evolved and society changed. It was also a time when the most important advances occurred in boat development that led to the seek sculls we are familiar with today: when the amateur versus professional debate was at its height and perhaps, most importantly, when amateur rowing clubs began to emerge and eventually supersede earlier, largely ad-hoc forms of rowing organizations. Today's club is of the thousands worldwide that function within a national and international framework.
